Attention Signatories to the Covenants Initiative:
Muslims must oppose the slanderous cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad published by Charlie Hebdo, which are both stupid and mean-spirited—but to behead a woman peacefully at prayer inside a Catholic church is not the way to do it! Such a heinous crime drags the names of both Allah and the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, in the dirt from one end of the earth to the other! This is an infinitely greater slander against our Prophet than a mere scurrilous cartoon! The only sane, intelligent and effective way of protesting slanders against the Prophet is with a firm and peaceful witness; in the words of the great poet of the west, William Shakespeare, “Blood is no argument”. This incident—and it is far from over—proves once again that the worst thing about hatred is that it makes you stupid. The Covenants of the Prophet Muhammad explicitly forbid such vicious actions, and place those who perpetrate in them under the curse of Allah and the Prophet. We ask that all who receive this message do all they can to bring the existence of the Prophetic Covenants to the immediate attention of Muslim, Christian and secular authorities, including consulates and embassies, in France, the United States, and anywhere else in the world.
